On A 'Natural' High

Gandang Kalikasan, Inc. (GKI), through its Human Nature brand, is a trail-blazing social enterprise focused on natural & organic products, driven by the philosophy of being PRO-PHILIPPINES, PRO-POOR and PRO-ENVIRONMENT. Founded in Nov 2008 by Anna Meloto-Wilk and Camille Meloto, daughters of Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto, their products are 100% made in the Philippines and 100% free from harmful chemicals.

Today it shares:
·   What the term ‘natural’ means
·   Reading the label

In this green-conscious world that we live in nowadays, more and more people are becoming aware of the dangers of using chemicals in our everyday products. From shampoos, toothpastes, deodorants, facial cleansers and even makeup, more people are on the lookout for natural alternatives that aren’t harmful to their health.

The main questions here though are, what exactly does natural mean and how does a product qualify to be considered natural? According to the Natural Products Association in the USA, for a product to be considered natural, 95% of its ingredients (excluding water) must be natural, meaning the ingredient must come from a renewable resource with no petroleum compounds and must be processed in a way which is not damaging to the environment. Also, it should avoid any ingredient with a suspected human health risk and should use no animal testing in its development. Lastly, it should use biodegradable ingredients and packaging that’s recyclable.

Now that we have that sorted out, you’re probably thinking, well, that makes life a whole lot easier. Not quite. Because even with all these criteria in place, it’s still hard to point out and determine which products are genuinely natural and which are still mainly chemical-laden with a few natural ingredients thrown in because it’s not mandatory for personal care products to get a natural certification. There’s no regulatory body that keeps an eye on products claiming to be natural. Basically, any company can throw in a few drops of some plant extracts in a formulation, top it up with chemicals, and call the finished product natural.

With this in mind, remember to always read the label! The top harmful chemicals to watch out for when reading the labels on personal care products are parabens, propylene glycol, SLS, SLES, synthetic fragrances, parfum, mineral oils and triclosan, among many others. Many have been found to be carcinogenic while others cause irritation, allergies, skin ageing, damaging effects to the brain and nervous system and many other alarming effects to your body and health. When reading the label, also remember that ingredients are listed in the order of percentage used so the higher it is on the list, the more of that ingredient was used.
